Mahmoud Ahmadinejad hailed a new era in relations with neighbouring Iraq as he began the first visit by an Iranian leader to Baghdad yesterday.
His presence, intensely controversial among many Iraqis, marks a watershed in relations between the two countries, which fought an eight-year war in the 1980s that left as many as one million dead.

The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made an unprecedented visit to Baghdad yesterday, demonstrating Iran's powerful influence in Iraq since the US overthrew Saddam Hussein five years ago.

Iraq, Iran agree to fight weapon smuggling

Iraq and Iran on Monday agreed to control their borders and prevent the smuggling of weapons.
This came in a final communique issued by Iraq and Iran on the occasion of the state visit by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Iraq.
In their statement, both countries stressed the necessity of working together to control the border and prevent the infiltration of terrorists and smuggling of weapons, drugs and others.
They also agreed to set up an executive committee to demarcate land and sea borders in light of the results reached between both sides following a Tehran meeting on February 19-22.

Turkish troops could re-enter Iraq

Turkish officials have said that troops may launch another incursion into northern Iraq to battle fighters belonging to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
The warning came a day after the country ended its ground offensive and withdrew its forces from the area.

Dozens die in Baghdad bombings

At least 25 people have been killed in two bombings in Baghdad despite increased security across the capital for the landmark visit of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president.
In the deadliest incident on Monday, 21 people were killed when an Iraqi army patrol was hit by a bomb in a parked car in Baghdad's Bab al-Muadham area, police said.
