Another Set-Back for the Peace Process

This week has witnessed another set-back for the Middle East Peace Process when on Tuesday (7th Dec) America relinquished its demands for a renewal of Israel's freeze on settlement construction.

Ghajar: Success for Whom?

Israel's commitment to withdraw from Ghajar would naturally be interpreted as a positive move, however it has the potential to create further complications both politically and for the residents themselves.

New Israeli Bill Proposed

A new bill has been proposed in the Israeli Parliament requiring organisations to make a declaration of loyalty to Israel being 'Jewish and democratic'. This could be considered somewhat of an oxymoron given that many of its citizens are not Jewish. If passed, it will certainly restrict certain organisations, working for the rights of all Israeli citizens regardless of their religion.

Sudanese Mothers for Peace - Chatham House 23/06

Sudanese Mothers for Peace held a meeting at Chatham House on 23rd June to appeal for funding for a new multi-purpose centre for training and development in Lhagwa, Kordofan. The centre is intended to promote regional reconciliation and reconstruction. Contact NCF for further details.

Iraq prime minister sweeps to victory in provincial elections

Much of the media coverage on Iraq has concentrated on al-Maliki's victory in last weekend's provincial elections. The BBC speaks of tentative first steps towards a stable democracy, while others concentrate on voter turnout and al-Maliki's ties to the former Bush administration.
